News and Events Kalamazoo lab company expands December 20, 2004 After one year of construction on lab space at the Southwest Michigan Innovation Center in Kalamazoo, biosciences startup Kalexsyn Inc. has expanded to 6,000 square feet and added more than a dozen employees. Kalexsyn’s initial construction was completed in March with 2,500 square feet of lab space. With 11 chemists on staff, the company is using about 75 percent of its leased space at the center and has the capacity to add four or five chemists. Robert Gadwood, president, COO and co-founder of Kalexsyn, said the new hires are likely to occur in the next several months. Kalexsyn could employ 50-100 scientists, but it may take up to 10 years to ramp up its operations to that point, Gadwood said. Continued expansion may include additional expansion at the center. Kalexsyn eventually plans to have its own lab in Kalamazoo. Kalexsyn is one of 14 startups at the center. At 86 percent capacity, the center currently provides space for 78 employees. Pharmacia Inc. scientists Gadwood and CEO David Zimmermann founded Kalexsyn last year after Pfizer reduced its research and development operations in Kalamazoo. The company’s startup funding included $192,200 from the Michigan Life Sciences Corridor, now the Michigan Technology Tri-Corridor, and $225,000 from Western Michigan University’s Biosciences Research and Commercialization Center, also in the innovation center. Kalexsyn provides contract medicinal-chemistry services for early phases of drug discovery leading up to clinical studies. For more information on Kalexsyn, visit www.kalexsyn.com. copyright © 2010.
